I've been thinking about this for a while after seeing different Defenders on the road, and one thing keeps coming to my mind — this vehicle doesn't feel like a normal machine. It feels alive in its own way.

Modern SUVs are built to remove effort from driving. Everything is smooth, silent, automatic, and easy. But in that process, something important gets lost — the connection between the driver and the vehicle.

The Defender is the opposite.

When you drive one, you don't just sit and relax. You participate in the drive. You feel the engine working, you hear the mechanical sounds, you sense the road through the steering. It's not always comfortable, but it is always real.

What makes it even more interesting is how different each Defender feels. No two vehicles give the same experience. Some are rebuilt, some are restored, some are modified — but each one carries its own story. That's something modern cars rarely have anymore.

I also feel like Defenders attract a certain type of person. Not just drivers, but people who enjoy character over perfection. People who don't mind a little noise, a little roughness, or a few repairs, because they value the experience more than convenience.

Even visually, the design doesn't try to be "perfect." It's boxy, simple, and functional. But that simplicity is exactly what makes it iconic. It doesn't try to impress you — it just exists confidently.

Sometimes I feel like driving a Defender is less about going from point A to point B, and more about enjoying everything that happens in between. The sound, the feel, the unpredictability — all of it becomes part of the journey.

Maybe that's why people still love it so much even after decades. Not because it is the most advanced vehicle, but because it still has soul.

And honestly, that's something very few modern machines can say today.

I've been using my dad's 30-year-old Defender for some time now, and honestly, driving an old Defender is a feeling modern vehicles can't really give.

Ours has a Puma engine conversion, so it has a nice balance of old-school Defender character with a bit more usable power and comfort. Even though the vehicle is old, it still feels solid and strong on the road. That heavy metal body, the driving position, the sound of the engine — everything feels raw and real.

Modern SUVs are smoother and easier to drive, but sometimes they feel too soft and disconnected. In the Defender, you actually feel the vehicle. Every gear change, every vibration, every sound becomes part of the experience 😄

Of course, owning an old Defender is not always easy. Small repairs and maintenance are part of the journey. But somehow that's also why people get attached to these vehicles. They have personality.

The best part is seeing how a 30-year-old machine is still surviving Sri Lankan roads better than some newer vehicles 😂 At the end of the day, driving old metal hits differently. It's not about luxury or technology — it's about character, memories, and the feeling behind the wheel. 👍

English Discussions / One Year with My Defender 90 😄
Last post by Tharindu_Kasun - May 08, 2026, 12:28 PM
Hi guys,

Been driving my 2004 Defender 90 for almost one year now, so thought of sharing my experience.

First thing — owning a Defender is completely different from owning a normal SUV. Every time I park somewhere, at least one person comes and talks about the vehicle 😅 The attention this thing gets is crazy.

At the beginning, driving it felt a bit hard because I was used to modern vehicles. Steering is heavier, the ride is rougher, and cabin noise is there. But after some time, you actually start loving that old-school feeling.

Maintenance-wise, yes... You need to spend a bit. During this year, I had some small repairs like oil leaks, bush changes, brake work, and electrical fixes. Nothing shocking for a 20-year-old vehicle, honestly.

One important thing I learned — don't ignore small issues on a Defender 😄 If there's a small sound today, fix it early before it becomes a bigger bill later.

Fuel economy is average only, but I knew that before buying. Nobody buys a Defender expecting Prius mileage anyway 😂

The best part is driving on rough roads. Bad roads, floods, village roads — this thing feels built for Sri Lanka. Overall, no regrets at all. It definitely needs care and patience, but the experience is worth it.

Machan, modding a Land Rover Defender 90 is super fun, but you have to do it smart—this is not like old Defender, this one full of sensors and tech 😄
If you're thinking off-road style, first thing people usually do is good tyres. Just switching to all-terrain tyres makes a big difference for our SL roads (mud, gravel, all included). After that, some go for a small lift or adjust the suspension—but careful ah, because this Defender has electronic systems, not fully mechanical like old days.
Then comes the looks + practical mods:

Roof rack (perfect for trips to Ella, camping, etc.)

Side steps or rock sliders

Front nudge bar / bull bar

Skid plates (useful if you're going rough places)

These give that proper "Defender look" and also some protection.
Performance side... honestly, not much needed. You can do ECU tuning or exhaust, but most guys here keep it stock because already powerful enough. Plus, don't want unnecessary issues.
Inside also you can do small small upgrades—like dash cam, better mats, organizers—nothing crazy but makes life easier.
One thing to remember machan: this vehicle uses systems like Pivi Pro infotainment system, so if you do cheap or wrong mods, you might get errors popping up. So always go to a good place, not random garage.
Best advice?
Don't overdo it. If you're using it for Colombo + weekend trips, just tyres + roof rack + maybe steps is more than enough. If you go full "off-road beast build," then do it step by step.
If you want, tell me your budget and what vibe you want (clean / off-road / show), I'll suggest a proper setup 👍

Machan, I've been seeing a lot of people asking about the Land Rover Defender 90, so just sharing what I've noticed and heard from a few owners here in SL.

First thing — the infotainment system (Pivi Pro infotainment system) sometimes acts up. Not all the time, but randomly it can lag or freeze. Usually a restart or update fixes it, but yeah... a bit annoying for a vehicle in this price range.

Then the air suspension — super comfortable when it's working properly, but some guys have faced issues like uneven height or warning lights, especially after going proper off-road or rough roads (which we all know we have plenty of here 😅).

Also heard about small water leaks here and there, like around doors or the back. Nothing major most of the time, but still something you don't expect from a Defender.

Fuel consumption... ah that one you have to accept. It drinks fuel, no joke. And brake wear also seems a bit high if you're driving it hard or in city traffic like Colombo.

But overall, honestly, the Land Rover Defender 90 is still a solid machine. Looks amazing, drives great, and off-road නම් next level. Just need to be ready for these small issues and maintenance side of things 👍
